Danielle Riggins smashes state hurdles mark

State Meet Highlights

The Wisconsin HS Track and Field Championships are held at UW-LaCrosse and feature three classifications. The state's standout performers this year were sprinter/pole vaulter Bonnie Draxler and hurdler/sprinter Danielle Riggins.

Top Performances:

- Danielle Riggins of Tremper, a senior, won the 100 meters (11.85), the 200 (23.99) and the 100 hurdles (13.67) for one of the greatest state meet performances in Wisconsin history. The hurdles time is a new all-time state best.

- Freshman Cami Davre of Whitefish Bay made a splash with D1 victories in the 800 (2:13.97) and the 1600 (4:51.27).

- Senior Natalie Schudrowitz of Wauwatosa East finished second in the D1 1600 (4:52.05) and won the 3200 (10:39.94).

- Senior Alisha Harper of Brookfield East won the D1 long jump (18-8), the 300 hurdles (44.12) and was second in the triple jump (37-10).

- Corbin Ellis, a senior at Oconomowoc, ran 47.94 to win the D1 400 meters and also anchored his team to the 4x400 relay title.

- Olin Hacker, a junior at Madison West, won the 3200 in 9:14.54 and he was also third in a competitive 1600 in 4:11.54.

- Glen Harold, a senior from Brookfield East, jumped 16-1 to win the D1 pole vault and broke the meet record.

- Daurice Fountain of Madison Memorial broke a 33-year-old state meet record in the 110 hurdles with 14.04 seconds (the all-time state best is 13.96). Fountain also took second place in the 300 hurdles and the long jump.

- Wisconsin Lutheran's 4x800 relay team -- Joel Janik, Kyler Lueck, Brad Meyer and Eric Brown II – broke the all-time state record with 7:39.39. That was also strong enough for US#5.

- Senior Bonnie Draxler of Wrightstown won the D2 100 meters (12.19), the 400 (56.16) and the pole vault with 13-3. It was her fourth straight state title in the PV.

- Monroe senior Ethan Moehn scored an impressive triple in D2 with 1:52.16 for 800, 4:09.56 for 1600 and 9:15.02 for 3200. Moehn is headed to Arkansas in the fall.

- Junior Erick Huertas of Grafton doubled in the D2 200 (22.09) and 400 (48.43). He ran an even better 47.86 in the prelims, the second-fastest time in Wisconsin this year. He also ran anchor on a meet record 4x400 relay team (3:19.04 in the prelims).

- Djade Denson of University Lake School in Milwaukee, won the D2 triple jump with 46-7.75.

- Kennedy Blahnik of Algoma was the top athlete in D3 and won the shot put with US#8 48-8 and the discus with 161-5 (she finished the season ranked US#3 in the discus). She won eight state titles and is headed to the University of Wisconsin.

- Nick Zander of McDonnell Central posted an impressive double in D3, taking the 800 in 1:54.93 and the 1600 in 4:11.65 to break the meet record. He also ran anchor on the winning 4x800 relay.

- Darin Lau of Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran smashed a 30-year-old meet record in the D3 3,200 with 9:07.62. He needed all of it to beat Darlington's Tyson Miehe, second in 9:08.87. Lau and Miehe were second and third, respectively, in the 1,600 as well.

- Junior Brittany Davis of Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg doubled in the 400 (57.70) and 800 (2:16.48) in the D3 meet.

- Isabel Seidel, the younger sister of 2011 Foot Locker champion Molly Seidel, won the D3 1600 (5:06.64) and 3200 (10:45.97) for University Lake School.

Top Teams:

With Riggins leading the way, Kenosha Tremper won the D1 girls state title with 48 points. Kimberly won the boys crown with 57 points. Monroe won the boys D2 team title with 63 points; Hayward won a close girls team battle with 38.

Lourdes Academy won the D3 girls title with 50 points and McDonnell Central won the boys title with 40 points.

Top Competition: Eric Brown II of Wisconsin Lutheran and Alec Miller of West Bend West shared the designation of top mid-distance runner in the state after the split the D1 800 and 1600 finals. In the 800 it was Brown taking the tape in 1:53.36 with Miller second in 1:54.06. And in the 1600, Miller won it with 4:10.25 and Brown was second in 4:11.51.

Record-breaker: Danielle Riggins ran her 13.67 hurdles race into a 1.1 headwind, meaning that under ideal conditions she probably could have gone a bit faster. As it was, it was a new all-time state record and part of a historic effort that included victories in the 100 and 200.
